Ali & Sons Marine Engineering Factory (ASMEF) participated in this year’s Middle East Workboats & Offshore Marine (MEWOM). It’s an event that brings together decision makers and buyers from a geographic marketplace that includes the mighty African Continent, the growing Caspian Sea area, the Indian Subcontinent and the Middle East.
The PR team of MEWOM conducted an interview with Mr. Shamis Al Dhaheri and it was published in MEWOM Daily News supplement on 1st October, 2013.
Below is an excerpt from the interview:
Q. Ali & Sons Marine Engineering Factory is a relatively young yard, what sort of demand has it had from the market for its services?
A. We are full up and the current scenario is that we are looking at five years of exponential growth. ASMEF is a fabrication, construction, ship repair and shipbuilding facility located in the city of Abu Dhabi Phase II Mussafah, spread over a land area of over 280,000 sqm with a water front of over 400m.
We are seeing good business in our shipbuilding sector, as we are currently constructing the biggest ship ever built in the UAE. At 126 metres, CS Maram is a custom-built cable laying vessel for E-Marine, an Etisalat subsidiary.
On the repair side, we have signed two big contracts for rig repairs for Dubai and Singapore-based companies
for the complete retrofitting of two rigs.
Q. How has the yard itself developed since it was established?
A. Although ASMEF is the youngest entity within the group – founded in 2009 and development started in 2010 – it is growing rapidly. The yard was just an empty expanse of sand in 2010. Now we are developing it conducting business at the same time. It all started with just 20 people, today we have 1200 workers and 120 staff and we see this kind of exponential growth in the next five years.
Q. How important is Ali & Sons location in the Abu Dhabi to the yard and its customers?
A. Effectively the yard is actually linked with Abu Dhabi’s growth in offshore oil and gas. We are in Abu Dhabi by choice. We made a very wise decision to invest in the market in 2009 when it was at its bottom and today we are seeing the results. We are expecting a turnover of over AED200m in 2013.
Our biggest strength is the fact that we are in Abu Dhabi and we see a huge potential in the oil & gas sector; which is our core business, serving the oil & gas marine sector.
